As usual the quality of the ensemble acting of the Shaw Festival is excellent. This is the singular feature that draws us back to the festival each year. I was looking forward with great anticipation to the production one of Ibsen's difficult plays, but was disappointed with its staging. At times I felt that I was looking at the play from behind the set, from over the actor's shoulders. Especially frustrating was the lack of directorial focus in the placement of the characters on the stage, eventuating in a somewhat clumsy bit of blocking. The actors, however, superceded these directorial shortcomings and made the characters believable, although the vitality of interaction was at times impeded.
